Restaurants with a lake view in Annecy: the three formats, published hours and seasonal opening

"Restaurant, Annecy, lake" is not one address, it is a family of addresses that have nothing in common except the view. Tourist pages list them all together; each restaurant publishes its own hours; no organisation puts a figure on anything.

The useful way to sort them is by three formats, because they do not share the same season, the same hours or the same prices. Here are those three formats, the villages where to find them, and the hours as the kitchens display them.

What are the three formats of lake view restaurant?

• By the water's edge: beach terraces and pontoons on the east and west shores. Open in season, with short services, from the beach bar at Saint-Jorioz to fine dining at Talloires.
• The high-altitude panorama: the restaurants at the Col de la Forclaz, 30 to 45 minutes from Annecy, with the whole lake below. Large terraces, passing trade, brasserie service at lunchtime.
• The hotel restaurant: the dining rooms and terraces of hotels on the Annecy lakefront and along the shores, open for more of the year, often all year round.

What official sources call the distinctive feature of Annecy is not one address, it is this density of three formats around a forty-kilometre lake loop. Nothing comparable is documented on the neighbouring lakes.

Which villages should you look in?

The sources mention five areas: Annecy itself, Veyrier-du-Lac and Talloires-Montmin on the east shore, Sevrier and Saint-Jorioz on the west shore, and the Col de la Forclaz above Talloires.

Travel times matter as much as the view: Talloires is 20 to 40 minutes' drive from Annecy, the Col de la Forclaz 30 to 45 minutes, and the main bus lines run from 8am to 8pm on Sundays, so the last bus leaves before dessert. What time are the kitchens open?

The restaurants publish short slots, and this is the most useful piece of information here: turn up outside the slot and you do not eat.

At Saint-Jorioz, the venue opens for longer than the kitchen: 10.30am to 3.30pm and 6.30pm to 10.30pm Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am to 3.30pm on Sunday for the bar, with meals served in two-hour windows. It is the typical pattern for beach venues.

No source publishes footfall by hour. The safest times for a table with a view are lunch and early evening, because those are the only times they are open; the rest is guesswork.

Which restaurants close in winter?

Seasonality is strong and it is not uniform. Les Terrasses du Lac, on the Semnoz road, opens from February to November. At the Col de la Forclaz, Le Balcon du Lac switches in winter to Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes according to the Talloires tourist office, with hours that its own website describes differently: the details are in Le Balcon du Lac.

By contrast, Ô Bon Bec, a hotel restaurant in Annecy, is listed as open all year round. That is the general rule: hotel restaurants stay open through the winter, while beach and mountain terraces close or cut back.

What nobody publishes in one place: one-off closures for private events, works or weather. A phone call before you set off is still the only check that works, especially out of season.

How much does a meal with a view cost?

The official pages give no prices, and no source documents surcharges for the view or the terrace. The ranges that exist come from menus and booking platforms, gathered for the restaurants on the shores of the lake.

They run from €18 to €30 for a main course in a beach brasserie to €75 to €180 for a set menu at a fine-dining restaurant on the east shore, with set menus at €45 to €72 listed in a directory for Les Terrasses du Lac. These are orders of magnitude, not price lists.

What is certain: you pay for the view twice, on the plate and in the parking, since on-street parking along the lakefront is charged seven days a week in Annecy. The charges are in parking in Annecy.

Do you need to book?

The compressed hours say it without saying it: a restaurant serving from 7pm to 9.15pm only does one sitting, and fills it. In season, on terraces with a view, booking is essential in practice, even though no source publishes waiting times or refusal rates.
