What to do in Annecy when it rains? The rainy-day plan, in order, and the ideas to skip
A rainy day in Annecy comes down to two museums, the Musée-Château and the Palais de l'Île, with a combined ticket at €8, €9 in July and August, €5 at the reduced rate. The order to visit them in, the lunchtime closure that catches people out of season, and the activities sold as indoor when they are not.
When it rains, Annecy loses its lake but keeps two indoor visits in the centre: the Musée-Château and the Palais de l'Île. The rest of the plan comes down to the order you do them in and to the opening hours, which change with the season.

Where should you start?

With the Musée-Château, at opening time. It is the most complete indoor visit in the centre, taking 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours between the castle's history, the regional collections and the display on alpine lakes.
The Palais de l'Île comes next, in 30 to 60 minutes: the former prison set on the Thiou is short, and fits well between two showers. The two sites are about ten minutes apart on foot, downhill from the castle.
The Palais is more photogenic, the castle richer. If you only do one, the Musée-Château gives more content for the time spent.
How much do the two museums cost?

The combined ticket saves €2.50 per adult out of season and €3 in summer. Accompanied children under 12 get in free: for a family with young children, the combined ticket only matters for the adults.
The museums are free on the first Sunday of the month, from October to May. That is also the day everyone takes refuge there: no count is published, but a queue is more likely.
Which opening hours catch you out on a rainy day?
From October to May, the museums close at lunchtime: 10am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 5.30pm. Arriving at 12.15pm leaves a quarter of an hour to visit, and the lunch break coincides with the time the old-town cafés are full.
In season, the Musée-Château is open all day, from 10.30am to 6pm, closed on Tuesdays. One source also reports a closure on the Monday after a free Sunday: check it before planning your visit.
A rainy day is easier with accommodation in the centre: both museums, the cafés and the covered passages are within walking distance of the old town. The search for accommodation in Annecy lets you sort by district.

The tourist office lists La Turbine Sciences in Cran-Gevrier, the Observatoire Régional des Lacs Alpins, and a series of small museums around the lake: the Cordonnerie, Paccard, the Maison de Pays du Laudon, the Muséum des Papillons et des Insectes, the Écomusée du Bois et de la Forêt and the departmental Resistance museum.
Most of them require a car and open on seasonal calendars. The Écomusée du Lac d'Annecy, in Sévrier, for instance only opens on weekdays: call on the day before setting off.
La Turbine suits families better than heritage lovers, and its appeal depends on the temporary exhibition on at the time. No complete 2026 price list was found for it.
Which ideas should you skip?
- The old town as a rainy-day activity: the arcades are only partly covered, and the cobbles get slippery. It is a route between two visits, not a three-hour programme.
- The lake tour: rain wipes out most of the scenery. Cycling round the lake is best kept for a dry day.

- Escape games, bowling, spas: they answer the rain, but have nothing to do with Annecy and fill up precisely on rainy weekends.
