What to do in Annecy this weekend? An hour-by-hour plan, and what to drop first

Travel guides all suggest the same plan for a weekend in Annecy: the old town in the morning, the lake in the afternoon, a bike ride or the mountains the next day. The problem is not the plan, it is the timing: nobody puts a figure on the queues, the museums' lunchtime closure or the time lost in crowded lanes.

Here is an hour-by-hour plan built on the real visit times found in recent guides, with a fallback plan if it rains and the budget items that go beyond the advertised estimate.

What does the first day look like, hour by hour?

• 9am to 12.30pm: the old town and the Palais de l'Île. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours at a normal pace, up to 4 or 5 hours with children or in the thick of the summer crowds.
• 12.30pm to 2pm: lunch. A casual meal costs €20 to €35 per person, a Savoyard fondue about €25.
• 2pm to 5pm: the walk up to the Musée-Château, 10 to 20 minutes on foot from the lanes, then 1 to 3 hours inside depending on your interest in the collections.
• 5pm to 7pm: the Pâquier, the Jardins de l'Europe and the Pont des Amours, all within 500 to 800 m of each other.

This block assumes you reach the old town before 10am: the guides explicitly recommend it to avoid the crowds, without ever saying how much time you lose after that hour.

What is the plan for the second day?

Two options come up in the guides consulted, depending on how much energy the group has.

• Gentle option: cycle along the lakeside path to Duingt (15 to 25 km, 3 to 4 hours with breaks), lunch by the lake, then 2 to 3 hours on the beach at Albigny or the Marquisats.
• Active option: a hike up Mont Veyrier, 4 to 6 hours door to door, then a late afternoon wandering the old town.

A full bike loop around the lake (37 to 45 km depending on the definition) is a whole-day project, not something to add to another plan. Cycling around the lake covers the route, the distances by section and the east shore closure at the end of 2026.

Which opening hours wreck the schedule?

The most common trap is the museums' lunchtime closure. On the first Sunday of the month, from October to May, the Musée-Château and the Palais de l'Île are free, but keep split hours of 10am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 5.30pm. Arrive at 1pm and you will find the door shut.

The town-centre beaches show lifeguard cover in July in the only dated source we found, with no confirmation for August. Better to check the signs on site than to rely on a month announced online.

No source consulted publishes a weekly closing day for the Palais de l'Île or the Château. That is a gap on the tourist offices' side, not an omission on ours: check before building a visit around a single slot.

What should you do if it rains?

The guides that cover the subject agree on the same fallback: the Musée-Château in the morning (2 to 3 hours), the animation film museum or the Palais de l'Île in the afternoon (1 to 2 hours), then cafés and covered lanes.

The animation film museum's opening hours are not published consistently in the sources consulted: phone before you go on a rainy day. Waiting times also go up on those days, since everyone heads for the same indoor activities.

What should you drop first if time runs short?

In the order suggested by the most realistic itineraries: first the full bike loop around the lake (keep a 15 to 25 km section), then one of the two museums if the morning runs over, then a beach or the pedalo if the queues grow.

Nobody publishes visitor numbers by hour, so there is no firm rule. The only reliable marker is your arrival time: before 10am in the old town, the guides are unanimous on that point.

How much does a weekend in Annecy really cost?

Travel weighs more than expected: a return TGV ticket from Paris to Annecy booked in advance costs about €114.
